Personal Journey, Advice, & Parenthood
This is my story
I was born with a unilateral cleft lip. I thought I was the only one in the world to have a cleft until I was 12 years old; my mom woke me up in the middle of the night to show me a commercial for donations needed for cleft lip/palate surgeries in 3rd world countries.
I have received education in Texas and Oklahoma. I have a Bachelor of Science degree, a Teaching English as a Foreign Language certificate, a master's degree in Education for Educational Technology, and English as a second language; Currently I am working on a 2nd master's degree in Special Education.
All of that being said, I am also a mother. My most outstanding achievement is in having a resilient, brilliant, and happy son. He was born with a bilateral cleft lip & palate. If not for my son being born the way he was, we would not have ended up at genetics finding out we have a genetic miscalculation. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
QUALIFIED PERSPECTIVE
I want to share my experiences as a person born with a cleft and as a mother of a son with a cleft lip & palate. It is difficult to understand what a child goes through when you haven't had that experience in your own childhood. Being a parent, in general, is its own experience, and then mixing the cleft experience with parenting can be overwhelming. I was lucky enough to know whom I needed my son to see medically without confusion. A lot of parents have not had the experience of cleft-related procedures prior in their life because their child is the 1st person they know with a cleft. I am here to educate and give advice from my experiences. "The best thing a human being can do is to help another human being know more." ~ Charlie Munger
